SHREWSBURY BISCUITS

You know me. When I do my web article it can be pretty random. There are usual some tentative links to all things blue and amber, and this weeks offering is no different.

It started off like this. I'm coming up to a year working in my current job. I was particular tight in when it was my birthday not bringing in cakes to work. As time went on the embarrassment factor of committing such a heinous crime meant that I was looking for an alternative date to apologies for my misdemeanour, and secondly rather than bring in cakes, wanted to do something Salopian.

So the idea entered my head. 'Bring in Shrewsbury Biscuits'. There is a tenuous link with my family and the biscuits, as a branch of the Plimmer clan (not it seems directly related) ran a shop in Shrewsbury, which sold the fruit and shortbread type tea-accompanying snack.

There used to be a plaque on the side of what is now Hawk's Cycles, which stated that this was where the famous Shrewsbury Biscuits were baked.

The biscuits popularity in godstown seems to have died, and around the country Chocolate digestives, Rich Tea, and dare I say it 'Lincoln' biscuits, seem to have stolen a march on something that is truly Salopian. However we may have to thank Clive of India for making Shropshire's own popular in the sub continent.

I can't remember the last time I saw Shrewsbury Biscuits being sold in Shrewsbury. I seem to remember seeing them at the Station Buffet many moons ago (but as I wanted a bottle of Newcastle Brown I didn't purchase!). Tales of them being available in Wetherspoons shake me.

So I did the usual thing. Put a request out to the fountain of all knowledge. The Blue and Amber message board. You want anything, need to know anything, and you get an answer. Not always the one you want mind, but an answer never the less!

A couple of places in town do still sell them, but some other cracking information came out. The link with India is amazing (see the website - thecookscottage ). Dave Matthias, he of ThrobsBlackHat fame has mentioned during his time there that people found it strange that he came from a town named after a biscuit (what they think in Nice I don't know. Maybe that is why Del Boy Asamoah went there?).

I digress. Could this be an opportunity for Shrewsbury to do some twinning? Could this be the way Shrewsbury really sells itself to the outside world? Do the Shrewsbury's in the good old USA sell these lovely items? Do they care? Who knows? But next week, in solace and hope of forgivement my colleagues in Droitwich will be having Shrewsbury Biscuits. Now I wonder if we can do Blue and Amber iced topped ones?

I enjoyed Stockport last week. A gritty performance from Town is my take on events at Edgeley Park. Stockport looked a good team, and although I thought they had most of the play second half, they didn't really create a clear chance to win the game.

Another link with Shrewsbury is that the Catholic Diocese of Shrewsbury covers Stockport. So plenty of good omens there then!

We found a couple of good little social clubs and watched the England game afterwards.

On the subject of the England game I'm disappointed to here that Town's game versus Chesterfield clashes with England's game against Estonia.

Normally the match would be moved to a Friday night or Sunday, but because of the new hospitality and restaurant facilities those are now dates when footie can't be played. That's fair enough and we know there is good thinking behind this.

Still an early kick off would have been the key Saturday, but alas the powers that be have declined.

It will be interesting to what attendance we get that day.

On the subject of all things new stadium, don't forget the open meeting on Tuesday at the Brooklands, kick off at 7.30 p.m. We want to here your views, and opinions, and solutions with regards New Meadow.

And don't forget the OSC's quiz night on Thursday. Will the shrewsTRUST team reign supreme again?

And finally a mention about the latest supporters bus to hit the roads. Coming from the Beeches, Bayston Hill. Give Russell a ring on 01743 872056. Leaving the pub car park at 2.10 p.m.

And further finally it's my old mans birthday tomorrow, and he's sitting up with us in Block 14. Come on Town. Oblige us with a win, please!
