Gary Peters makes a couple of changes to the starting line-up with Michael Symes coming with for Stuart Nicholson and David Hunt in for Danny Hall.
There were glimpses of the goal for both sides early with Marc Pugh using his space to ease past Ryan Bennett down the left, then a good move from the visitors saw an inviting chip over the Town defence near put Rankin in on goal.
Town were looking the stronger of the sides in the opening exchanges with Pug causing a lot of problems for the Grimsby def3ence, but when Dave Hunt got the ball in the final third his throw had the panic amongst the visitors.
The first booking of the game was picked up by Colin Murdock within 10-minutes of the game starting, he had been having a good tussle with Isaiah Rankin since the kick-off but when Rankin skipped past Murdock down the right the Town 23 sent Rankin flying.
Grimsby had a great chance to grab the lead after some great work by Ranking that ended with a cheeky back heal to put Tom Newey in on goal, he had only Garner to beat and tried to put a shot under the Town keeper but Garner was down smartly to smoother, he seemed to have the ball in his hands but Newey knocked it out to Peter Till who drove in a great shot that cannoned into the bar.
Town were straight back at the visitors and Marc Pugh once again tour through the heart of the visitors, he broke towards the area looking for the shot but it was blocked but the ball then dropped to Dave Hunt who smashed in a superb low drive that beat the dive of Barnes but the post was there to save Grimsby.
Town were having a good period of pressure with another long throw from Dave Hunt causing all sorts of problems after Justin Whittles flick clearance nearly ended up in the back of the net. Marc Pugh was still terrorising the visitors defence with him pace but the link up with the front two wasn't there at the moment.
Grimsby had another great chance to grab the lead on the half-hour mark after they found space down the right-hand side, the ball was crossed over but Langmead got a head to it though the ball then dropped to Rankin whose back heal had Garner wrong footed but went just wide of the post.
The later parts of the half were the opposite of the exciting end to end football of that both sides had played at the start of the game. Moves were breaking down and the football wasn't as slick as it had been but both sides were still looking to attack when they could.
Grimsby has a great break late on after Rankin had easily turned Darren Moss after a Town attack had broken down, Rankin was away downfield with Till to his right and only Marc Tierney back, Ben Herd was doing his best to get back and Tierney was doing his best to send Rankin was from goal, Rankin then laid a great ball into Till who went for the shot but Tierney managed to get an all important block in when it looked like the goal was on.
Half-time: 0-0
Town had a great chance to grab the lead just after the restart following more good work from Pugh, he skipped past 3 Grimsby players and then stabbed the ball into the path of Dave Hunt, he then looped a great ball high in towards Barnes in the visitors net, a clump of players jumped for the ball with Hibbert and Langmead making a nuisance of themselves, the ball then dropped over and looked to be going over the line but somehow Ryan Bennett got a block in and the officials were happy that the ball had not crossed the line.
Moments later Town were in the lead as they continued to pile the pressure onto the visitors. An attack saw the ball come out to Darren Moss about 20-yards out, he then crossed a low ball in that Dave Hibbert met sweetly on the volley and the ball flew past Barnes to make it 1-0 to Town.
Grimsby had another good sight of goal after they were awarded a free-kick about 25-yards out. Dave Mulligan placed the ball and then drove in a great looking shot over the wall but Garner was equal to it and held onto the ball well.
On 61-minutes Town added a second goal and it was another excellent finish. They broke down the right hand side with Hibbert combing well to put Herd away down the wing, he then curled over a great ball that found Michael Symes just inside the box and he stroked home an excellent finish past Barnes and into the foot of the net.
Michael Symes was the next player into the refs book after he had dived in to block but caught a Grimsby player late, and then minutes later Gary Peters brought off Symes and replaced him with Stuart Nicholson.
Grimsby were handed a lifeline on 69-miniutes when they won a penalty. Tom Newey caused some problems as he broke through the Town defence and Marc Tierney looked caught Newey and the ref had no hesitation pointing to the spot. Ciaran Toner placed the ball and then smashed his shot straight down the middle to send Garner the wrong way.
Grimsby looked like they might be on level terms after they got in behind the Town defence with Danny North, he burst into the area but Kelvin Langmead managed to get back and hook a foot around to get in a superb block and Marc Tierney came over to save the ball going behind for a corner.
With just over quarter of an hour of the game remaining Gary Peters made his next change bringing on Danny Hall to replace Dave Hunt.
Town were still creating some great chances with a Pugh corner finding Moss, he couldn't connect with his header but Langmead was at the backpost to get a shot in which Barnes did well to tip over. Then some great work from Pugh, Hall and Herd saw the ball played into to Nicholson on the edge of the box, he skipped across the box and then drove in a low shot which flew just wide.
Grimsby were throwing everything they could at Town to get the equaliser but the home side were managing to hold out. Gary Peters made one final change bringing off Dave Hibbert and replacing him with Darran Kempson.
Town were soaking up a lot of pressure but then Ben Herd picked the ball up and was away down the right, he continued his run but did the sensible thing and held up play, mean while Stuart Nicholson was breaking down the centre until Ryan Bennett blocked him off, the linesman flagged straight away and after consultation with ref Singh produced a second yellow card and sent off Bennett.
Full-time: 2-1
