Gary Peters rings the changes from the side that lost 4-3 to Rochdale on Saturday with Darren Moss, Darran Kempson, Michael Symes and Danny Hall coming into the squad while Stuart Nicholson, Stewart Drummond, Chris Humphrey and Colin Murdock dropping out of the starting line-up.
Town got the crowd going moments into the game following a mazy run from Marc Pugh down the right that resulted with an inviting cross across the face of goal that Michael Symes got a foot to but keeper Jalal got across to save.
Peterborough had two good chances to grab the lead straight after wards and a cross from Keates found Mackail-Smith unmarked at the back post, he smashed in a shot but Langmead dived in to block. The corner was lofted over by Jamie Day and found Craig Morgan in space at the back post; he looped a header across that hit the bar and went behind.
The visitors were the ones making the most of the game as the pushed Town back into their own half. Posh were trying to get the ball into McLean and turn the Town defence but the home defence were managing to deal with it even though were a little stretched at times.
Town created a chance out of nothing following a good period of pressure, the ball was played back to Tierney from Marc Pugh and Tierney curled a great ball down the left to find Danny Hall in behind the Posh defence, he kept his run going and hit in a low drive across the goal that Jalal did well to get down to and tip round the post.
From the resulting corner Town had another great sight of goal after the ball found Darren Moss in space near the back post, he stabbed in a shot which flew across the face to find Kelvin Langmead coming in at the back post, he hit a low shot in but Jalal was again equal to it and pulled off a great block to deny.
Town were getting closer to snatching the lead twice in quick succession, the first following a free-kick that saw Hibbert get a touch but Jalal was there to turn if behind for another Town corner. The corner was then swung over to find Langmead who flicked on a header that beat Jalal but Newton was there on the line to deny Town.
A minute later Peterborough grabbed the lead after a long clearance down field finally came to Charlie Lee on the edge of the Town box, he drove in a low shot which beat the dive of Garner and then hit the inside of the post and rolled in to the net.
The game then went a little flat for the remaining 10-miniutes with Peterborough pushing Town back into their own half for a big period and not allowing the home side to get back. Peterborough had a couple of good moves that opened up the Town defence but the half ended with Posh 1-0 to the good.
Half-time: 0-1
Town had a great chance straight after the restart after Hunt threaded another great ball through to put Symes away over the halfway line, he powered forward with Hibbert and Pugh in support, Symes then pushed the ball to put Pugh in on the right of goal but his low shot was excellently blocked by a flying Peterborough body.
It had been a scrappy opening 15-minutes but Town had a great break after Dave Hunt curled a ball into the run of Pugh down the left, he held the ball up and then back healed the ball into the run of Marc Tierney, he continued to push and then curled over an early ball to the back post for Hibbert, he nodded it back down to find Danny Hall who hooked in a shot that Jalal did well to save.
Hall was then guilty of giving away possession after he waited to hook the ball back into the Peterborough box, the ball rebounded off Mackail-Smith and then dropped top McClean, his pace took him away downfield and he then played the ball into Mackail-Smith, he continued the run downfield doing well to keep on his feet after a couple of challenges, and then cut the ball back into the Town box but Danny Hall had done brilliantly to get back and snuff out the danger.
Town had been creating chances all evening and when the ball came to Hibbert out on the left touchline he did brilliantly to hold play up, he then flicked the ball to Pugh who in turn curled a great cross field ball to find Hunt breaking down the left, he powered towards the Posh box and drilled in a low shot but again the visitors defence showed great spirit to throw bodies in the way to block.
Town's first switch of the evening came on 62-minutes when Marc Tierney was replaced by Neil Ashton, Tierney had pulled up earlier with what looked like a hamstring pull and limped away from the action.
Peterborough were looking more and more likely to add to their lead and when Newton got the ball out on the right he breezed past Langmead and the Pugh to burst into the Town box, he drove a low ball across the face of the goal but Garner was down quickly to flick it away and Ashton was there to clear up the danger.
Gary Peters made his second change with over 20-minutes of the half remaining bringing on Stewart Drummond to replace Danny Hall.
Town were trying to push but couldn't get the ball to hold in the final third and this was giving the advantage to the visitors. Darren Ferguson changed things around bringing off Mackail-Smith who had been causing Town problems was replaced by George Boyd.
Peterborough grabbed an excellent second goal after George Boyd was allowed to find space around the Town box; he then hit in a sweet left footed drive that flew left Garner rooted to the spot and flew into the net to make it 2-0.
Marc Pugh had found little space in the Posh defence but when Hibbert got possession on the right he played Pugh in down the left, he had Newton to beat and his pace took him past him to the by-line and then hung a great looking cross towards the back post but Jalal managed to get a palm to it and bring the ball down at the second time of asking.
Town were still pushing, even though the crowd seemed to have given up, and when the ball came to Drummond just inside the visitors half he turned well and then looked for options, none were on so he skipped past his marker and powered forward, Peterborough backed off and this handed Drummond space which he took the ball into and then drove in an excellent shot which flew just over the bar.
Full-time: 0-2
