Midfielder Signs
Town manager Gary Peters has this morning confirmed that Jimmy Ryan will now become a Shrewsbury Town player.
He's signed the papers but with him being at the club on a temporary loan it means technically he won't be a Town player until 1st January 2008. The club have extended his current loan by a month which means he is eligible to play first team football.
It is good news for Town and for Jimmy who has impressed in the Carling Cup and Johnstone Paint Trophy since joining from Liverpool just before the season started.
Talking to ShrewsWeb this morning GP was pleased to have finally brought the exciting youngster to the club: "It's taken a little while to get to this point but as from today Jimmy will be our player.
"Technically he won't be our player until January 1st where he can then play first team football indefinitely.
"From today he will be on loan for another month, 31 days is how long we have left that he can play first team football, after that he can play in our reserves but not in the first team until January 1st.
"It's because Jimmy came on a temporary loan you can only have 93 days playing for a club.
"If on the first day we took Jimmy we had taken him on a permanent loan then we would have had him until January or however long we decided. With a youngster coming out the Premier League you never know how it will work and because Jimmy hadn't really played reserve football it was hard to judge how good he could be.
"In that first month he played some good games against a good class of opposition which alerted everyone to the fact that we might have a player.
"It's still early days and we haven't seen Jimmy play in our league against that type of team so it's now a test for us to see if we can help Jimmy step up to Football League standard."
Peters is hoping that Ryan will develop into a first team player and admits the first signs are encouraging. The Town manager has worked with the player in training and has asked fans to show patience as he looks to bring through another promising player: "It's his age that made us take him, the fact he's only just 19 years of age and we can see talent in him.
"Our job now is to make sure that talent can now develop and emerge into the first team.
"He's done well in the reserves and is now steady, and that's another step towards his development.
"The fans need to patient as well because he's our player now and we've got until next June to see if can step up and make us a better team.
"Jimmy is bright and lively and is enjoying being here, that comes through on the training field.
"Now we've got it all sorted out with Liverpool Jimmy has more of a chance of getting a first team game, if he's performing well enough in training and the reserves."
