With Stewart Drummond's departure to Morecambe yesterday this meant that Town would be looking for a new skipper.

Gary Peters was quick to announce that Ben Davies would be taking over the captain's armband for the remainder of the season.

The news has gone down well with the Town fans who seem happy for the popular midfielder to be skippering their club.

ShrewsWeb grabbed a quick word with Ben this morning before he took to the training field: "It's a massive honour and I'm over the moon with the gaffer making me captain.

"Some people will ask if it will change me but I don't think that it will, it is a massive honour to be made leader of such a nice bunch of lads.

"Hopefully I can do a good job both on the field and off the field."

The Town squad is a tight bunch of lads and there is always a good buzz around the training field. Even though Ben is only 27 years of age he's now one of the more senior players and is looking forward to helping his young squad to develop: "They are a top bunch lads and it's always a pleasure to captain such a good set of players.

"It's always nice to be there for the young lads and we have got a young squad, I'm one of the more experienced lads and it will be good to help them along.

"The likes of Chris Humphrey and Steve Leslie are still young and have a lot to learn and it will be good to be there for them and help them come through."

There were a few raised eyebrows when Ben was left out of the squad for Peterborough when he was rested by GP. He is fully recovered from his ruptured Achilles which kept him out of the squad since May but still needs to keep an eye on things. The number of games over Christmas had left him stiff and with the lack of spare days he had been unable to do his normal strengthening program: "I'm still getting the aches and pains after games but not as bad as I used to.

"The ankle and Achilles were really stiff after the Wycombe game and it probably would have been a step too far to play at Peterborough.

"With there being so many games over the last weeks I haven't been able to do as much strengthening work as I would have liked to and that's when it starts to stiffen up a bit.

"I've had a rest now and hopefully I will benefit from that going into the Brentford game."

Ben will take to the new stadium pitch tomorrow with the captain's armband for the first time. It's a big game for him and big game for Town as they look to push on in the second half of the season:"We need to get at them straight from the start and play with a high tempo.

"It's a massive game for us and we need to get the 3 points to get us in the mix again.

"Hopefully we can now get a little run together and start picking up points."

The fans have also picked up at the new stadium with more vocal backing in the recent home games. As the club go into the important second half of the season Benji thinks the fans can also play a big part in the clubs success: "The fans have been brilliant over the Christmas period and the attendances have been excellent.

"The second half of the season is important and as you push for the finish line you tend to get more and more fans coming along.

"Hopefully we can stay in the pack there and push on and get the fans coming to watch us."
