Gary Peters has added another promising youngster to the squad with the addition of 19 year old James Meredith to the squad.

Meredith has been training with Town over the last week or so and took part in the 1-0 reserve win over Bradford City.

The Australian born defender came through the youth ranks with Derby County. He never broke into the first team at Pride Park but had loan spells with Cambridge United and Chesterfield.

GP revealed the news after yesterday's game with Hereford that James would be joining on a 1 ½ year deal: "We've signed a young lad James Meredith who is just a youngster and is only 19 years of age.

"He can play left sided centre-back and left-back who played in our reserves the other week and after I saw him play I knew we had to sign him.

"He's Australian and was a youngster with Derby. He was released by Derby at the end of last season and he wanted to go straight out and play games so went out to play for Sligo.

"He's gotten stronger during that time and that 6-months have really brought him on. He's quick, aggressive, decent in the air and has an excellent left foot.

"he's trained with us a bit and played in the reserve game with us last week. I think i made my mind up after 20-minutes of the game that we needed to sign him.

"We signed him on Saturday but it wasn't in time for the Hereford game but that's one of the reason we let Ashy go to Macclesfield on loan as we now have good cover and pressure for Marc Tierney and Colin Murdock.

"He's a super young lad and i really think that he may become a real player.

"He maybe one for the future but we'll see how he goes over the next few weeks.

We've got a clause in the contract that as soon as he's played 5 games in the first team we can renegotiate the contract so there is an incentive for him to do well quickly."

James Meredith will have squad number 33.
