Yesterday the news was that Andy Cooke was all set for a move to Notts County with various website reporting it as a done deal.

Cookey travelled up to Nottingham to speak to the club but after passing his medical he decided that he would be staying as a Shrewsbury Town player.

County had contacted GP earlier in the week about taking Cookey on loan but the Town manager had turned them down. They then spoke to his agent about a deal and in keeping with GP's policy he made Cookey aware of the interest and allowed him to speak to County.

In the end Cookey didn't think the move was right for him and the news has delighted Gary Peters: "That's why we don't announce things until they are completed and that's why people on other websites put things up and look very foolish.

"I'm delighted to say we've got Andy Cooke back and he is still with us.

"It was an interesting one where they wanted Andy on loan but is said they couldn't have him so they went round the back door and started talking to Andy's agent. They spoke to the agent and told him what they would pay and offered an 18-month contract and he came back to me saying it would only be fair for Andy to speak to them unless we were able to offer the same. It wasn't done in a bad way as I like Andy's agent and get one with him but he was just looking out for his player.

"We allowed Andy to speak to Notts County and he went over there, like any good pro would, to see what they had to offer.

"He had the medical there and passed it with no problem but then when the deal was all ready to be signed he decided he didn't want to go through with the move and wanted to come back to Shrewsbury.

"I got a phone call straight away and I was absolutely delighted that Andy was on his way back to us.

"We've waited a long time for Andy to be fit this season and he's got 4 goals in 6 starts for us and he is player who can always get a goal."

With Cookey being out of contract in the summer a few Town fans have pondered if this news might mark and end for him but GP revealed that the door was still open: "Of course there is a possibility for him here, we've still got another 17 games to play and Andy's got to come back and stay free of injury and get himself in the team and score goals.

"Everybody has got the same chance as everybody else and between now and the end of the season it's all about performance."
