Rob On Morecambe and Hereford
ShrewsWeb took time this morning to sit down with Town Managing Director Rob Bickerton to speak about a couple of the current issues.
The first was the late postponement of Saturday's Coca Cola League game away to Morecambe. The news that the game was in doubt didn't reach Town until the team coach got to Christie Park and they were about to unload.
It was at the same time that Rob heard the news when he arrived at the ground after a pleasant morning in the Morecambe sunshine on the seafront.
He's spent the early part of the week talking to officials at both clubs and at the Football League about the postponement. He's also had numerous emails and calls from fans who have been voicing their concerns at the late decision on the game: "The thing that most people talking about this week has been the postponement of the game away to Morecambe.
"It caught me completely by surprise as I had set off from my home early in the morning with my wife as we planned to get to Morecambe early and have a walk along the promenade before the game.
"We had a lovely morning walking up and down the seafront in the glorious sunshine before heading over to Christie Park for the game.
"We arrived at the ground about quarter past one, at the same time as the team coach, and at that point no one at Shrewsbury had been called to suggest that there may be a problem with the game. Normally you would expect there would be phone calls between the club secretaries' but I've been told that never happened.
"We were told there was a pitch inspection at quarter to two which took place and the ref said there would be another one at quarter past two which as we all know he did and then called the game off.
"What is interesting to me, and it's something I don't know the answer too, is what Morecambe did to try and get the game on. Did they have the covers on the right areas, at what time did the grounds man start working on the pitch?
"At the end of the day the referee called the game off to ensure the players safety and having been there I know that at quarter past two that was the right call.
"We now face going back up to Morecambe on April 8th and we hope that the weather will be a lot better then.
"It interesting to see the lengths that Morecambe went to to try and get their game with Grimsby Town on. I read that they had got hot air blowers and heaters on the pitch and that suggests to me they are putting more effort into getting that game on then they did on Saturday.
"Having said that Morecambe have had a lot longer to prepare for the Grimsby game as the cold spell has been with us for a few days now."
The club have received a lot of calls from Town fans who travelled up to Morecambe asking for free coach travel to be laid on. Even though the first Shrewsbury Town knew about any problems was when the team coach arrived Rob revealed that the club are looking into the possibility of laying on coaches for the re-arranged date: "It wasn't the club or our fans fault that the game was called off but because the fans are so valuable to the club and recognising the unique circumstances of Saturday's postponement we are looking into the possibility of funding coaches to the game.
"The game was called off at such a late stage and there was no way we could warn our fans who had already travelled, we didn't get a warming from Morecambe so were unable to warn our fans.
"I have spoken to the Away Travel club and to the Official Supporters club to understand whether it is feasible for the club to fund those coaches. Over the next couple of days we will hopefully be able to confirm this and how people will book them onto the coaches.
"We have also approached Morecambe and suggested to them that they might offer Shrewsbury supporters a reduced admission price which they have to take to a board meeting."
Saturday see's the visit of high flying Hereford United for the first time to Town's new stadium. They teams have met numerous times over the years since they first met back in 1892.
Hereford have been one of the surprise packages in League 2 this season and the game at Edgar Street back in January was one the first that Rob saw in his new role. Hereford have sold just under 1600 ticket so far and with Town averaging well over 5000 home fans so far this season it looks like it could be a bumper crowd: "I'm really looking forward to the Hereford game as it will be the first game at the new stadium where the visitors have brought a large support. In the three home games I've seen so far there have only been a couple of hundred supporters.
"Having spoken to people at the club I can feel how exciting the local derby with Hereford is and with them looking like bringing more than 1500, based on ticket sales and I know the Shrewsbury fans will be attracted to this game.
"I'm looking forward to seeing the stadium full with a lot of fans and a lot of noise.
"I'm also expecting a good performance from what I believe is an exciting Shrewsbury Town side."
