Season Review - October
Martin Wild continues his look back at Town's eventful 2007/08 season.
October
Salop had an early opportunity to get the Rochdale defeat out of their system when they entertained Darren Ferguson's Peterborough side in the first floodlit league game to be held on Oteley Road. But they were made to look distinctly second best and left the field to a chorus of boos from the home fans after a second successive home defeat, this time by two goals to nil.
The following Sunday saw the team and it's somewhat down-trodden supporters head up the A41, for a noon showdown at the Deva Stadium, home of Chester City. Half-time saw the teams leave the field level and although Darren Moss equalised Chester's opener, two goals in quick succession made it a painful afternoon's viewing, and brought about a worrying third straight defeat for Peters and his men.
Midway through the month we were one of only three fixtures to be played on the Saturday afternoon, as the date clashed with a vital Euro qualifier for England against Estonia at Wembley. Chesterfield were the visitors and the smallest crowd of the season so far (5143) saw yet another defeat by three goals to two. This came despite Town leading through another Dave Hibbert strike, with the visitors equaliser on half-time changing the course of the game. Murdock reduced the arrears after Chesterfield went on to build a 3-1 lead, but defeat number four had seen the side slide towards mid-table.
Peters was in the middle of one of his worst runs as a manager but had skipper Stewart Drummond to thank for grabbing an 84th minute leveller at Bury to stop the rot. Danny Hall went close to grabbing a late winner but at least the run of defeats was over and with bottom of the table Mansfield the next team to sample the Meadow for the first time, lips were being licked at the prospect of seeing a win for the first time in a month.
Despite being reduced to ten men for the whole of the second half against Billy Dearden's side, Town fans saw the first goalless encounter at home and once again, the team were given the bird Season Review - Septemberas they left the field. It was a very frustrating afternoon and the winless run showed no signs of abating. In the draw for the first round of the FA Cup, Salop were paired with Walsall who of course won League Two last season, and the tie was to be held at the Midlander's Bescot Stadium.
