Two New Faces
Paul Simpson has today bolstered his squad with two new faces joining the Town squad after passing their medicals this afternoon.
The Town manager has brought in a young exciting forward and a vastly experienced midfield player.
The first new face is 19 year old Stephen Hindmarch who has progressed through the youth ranks at Carlisle United. He's made a number of appearances from the bench and is a player that Simpson has high hopes for. The youngster was chased by a number of Premier League clubs a short while back and will be hoping the move can kick-start his career.
The second new face is the addition of vastly experienced central midfielder Paul Murray. 32 year old Murray spent last season playing in the SPL with Gretna as well as captaining the side. He started his career at Carlisle before moves to QPR, Southampton, Oldham and a spell in Portugal before returning to Carlisle. He's made over 300 appearances in the league as well as having a healthy goals ratio from the centre of midfield.
Paul Simpson was delighted to have landed the two players: "It's good to have two new players on board, they are both players who I have worked with before but that doesn't mean I'm only going to be brining in players that I've worked with before.
"I think they are two players will bring a lot to the squad for different reasons."
Simpson has worked with Stephen before, he knows the potential that the player has and hopes he can fulfil that potential with Shrewsbury Town: "You look at Stephen Hindmarch who is a young player who 18 months ago had the world at his feet with Premier League clubs clamouring to take him away from Carlisle. For whatever reason this last 12 months hasn't gone for him but he is a player who has great potential.
"He's a young lad and I'm delighted that he has agreed to come and join us and the challenge is there for him now to show everyone that he has the ability and mentality to become a good professional footballer.
"If he shows everybody the levels of performance that I know he is capable of and adds a steelier determination to that then I feel we could have ourselves a decent player.
"If we are honest then every signing a manager makes is a gamble, you have no guarantee with who you bring in whether they are 18 or 31. Stephen is a gamble but one that I think is worth playing because I know the type of football that he can produce and on occasions last year he did that. There was a wonder goal he scored in the FA Youth cup against Manchester United that everyone was raving about.
"What I have to do now is work with Stephen and help him come through what has been a really difficult last couple of months for him and make sure that he works hard enough to prove to everyone that he can be a good player."
Simpson held talks with Paul Murray and despite offers to play at a higher level he jumped at the chance to come and join Town after seeing the stadium and facilities and hearing of Simpsons plans: "Paul is central midfielder and he's had a good career so far. Last year he had a good strong season where he played over 30 games for Gretna in the SPL. It was a really tough season for that football club but Paul really showed that he can play.
"He's got good fitness levels and is a leader out on the pitch in the way that he goes about his business; he's an organiser, a talker and is not afraid to pull people up if they aren't doing their jobs properly.
"I'm delighted that Paul has agreed to join us as he had other options to go to a higher level. I've shown him around the stadium, told him what my plans and ambitions are for the club and he's decided to come and join us on a two year contract."
Since taking over the Town managerial hot seat Simpson has spoken about the need to add experience to the side. The addition of Murray adds this experience and he is expecting a busy time ahead with further additions: "These are two signings but hopefully they are the first two of what could be a busy time for us.
"I want to bring other players in and I've said all along I want to bring in experience in and Paul Murray definitely fits the bill of experience.
"He's a leader and a captain type character, Stephen is a different type as he is that little bit of a gamble but I feel they could be two good additions to our squad. "
It's hoped that the deal to make Asa Hall's move from Birmingham City a permanent one will be completed next week when the player's agent returns from holiday.
